SHOT Show 2017 Day One

Last Updated on

We’re at SHOT Show day one, and we have plenty of coverage of new products planned throughout the week. Up first, let’s take a quick look at new products from Magpul, Danner, Streamlight and Walther.

Magpul

Magpul has several new items on display in their stylish SHOT Show booth, but the display that catches everyone’s eye first and foremost is the 10 year anniversary of the PMAG timeline. This bright display features the complete history of the PMAG design over the past 10 years including the very first concept PMAG, new developments over the years, and famous appearances of the PMAG. Of particular note was the PMAG’s role in the Bin Laden raid as all the HK416 rifles used were fed with Magpul EMAGs.

New this year in the PMAG line is PMAG 30 AR 300 B designed specifically for .300 BLK rounds. The internal geometry of the 300 B is designed to accommodate the wide variety of bullet profiles offered in .300 BLK rounds, and a distinct rib profile on the outside of the magazine ensures you can tell the difference between .300 BLK magazines and other magazines so you don’t accidentally cross-load them. The 300 B is a nice addition to the already exceptional PMAG GEN M3 line.

Magpul has beefed up their apparel and accessory line as well, and the DAKA pouch series was certainly worth a closer look. The DAKA series utilizes reinforced polymer fabric with an anti-slip texture, and it’s extremely light and thin but nearly indestructible. Magpul has tested the material thoroughly to ensure it wouldn’t rip or come apart even under heavy abuse. The DAKA line starts with minimalist wallets ($9.95 MSRP and up). Magpul touts that you probably have too much junk in your wallet anyway, and the DAKA wallets will help you clean it up. There are also larger pouches available for various gear, and they have YKK Aquaguard zippers to keep your items safe from water exposure. While the DAKA line isn’t waterproof, it is water resistant, and a tight seal on the pouches should keep your items dry as long as you’re not submerging the pouches underwater.

Finally, Magpul has new DAKA Supressor pouches in three different sizes to hold suppressors when not in use. These pouches offer the same performance as the rest of the DAKA line, but they are careful to caution that a hot suppressor should not be placed in them until it has cooled down. These suppressor pouches are extremely affordable as well and start at $17.95 for the small size and $25.95 for the largest size.

Danner

Next up, we stopped by the Danner booth to check out what they have to offer in both their outdoor and tactical lines. Up first, the Danner Reckoning tactical boot seeks to completely revolutionize the military boot concept, and comfort and reduced weight are Danner’s primary focus in this design. The sole has omni-pivotal lugs and beveled edges to maximize grip in the field, and a Vibram midsole and outsole offer superior shock absorption. The boot utilizes a speed lace design and it has a speed loop at the ankle level to help lock the boot tightly in while you wear it. Danner touts that military and private users rave about how the boot feels, and even those with leg and ankle issues are finding it one of the most comfortable tactical boots they’ve ever worn. Best of all, the boot is made in the US and retails for a reasonable $259. The Reckoning is available in sage green and coyote colors.

On to the newest outdoor-focused offering from Danner, the Explorer 650 is an update on the award winning Mountain 600. The boot requires little to no break-in time, and it features an new Vibram sole design for maximum comfort. The Explorer 650 retails for $190.

Streamlight

Streamlight has updated their pistol weapon mounted light / laser line for 2017 to include TLR-6 rail-mounted light options. Previously only trigger guard lights were available from Streamlight. The design is extremely compact and weighs only 1.27 oz., and it can be used in light only, laser only and light/laser both on modes. The light has a 100 lumen output with a constant run time of one hour on two 3V CR-1/3 N lithium batteries. The TLR-6 series is available for Glock 26, 27, 33, 42 and 43 models, S&W M&P Shield 40 and Shield 9 models, SIG P238 and 938 models, the Kimber Micro and several Kahr Arms models. However of particular note is a new TLR-6 designed specifically for 1911 pistols.

Walther

Finally, the new Walther Creed 9mm pistol was certainly worth a stop on the first day at SHOT. This new pistol from Walther improves on the styling of the PPQ series of handguns, and there is a lot to like about the design. The Creed has a new and improved grip, 4″ barrel length, a 16 round magazine capacity, a consistent 6.5 lb. trigger pull, rail mount for lights / lasers,  Tenifer coating on the slide and barrel and an adjustable rear sight for windage. Specs aside, the pistol feels great in the hand and is an extremely attractive offering from the already well-respected Walther line. The best part – this pistol retails for only $399.
