Smith & Wesson is raising the bar once again, giving fans of all-metal pistols new EDC options with the launch of the M&P9 M2.0 Metal Compact pistols. The series expands with the 4.0-inch and 3.6-inch barrel variants, striking a perfect balance between the performance you’d expect from an all-metal pistol and the portability ideal for everyday carry.

Introducing the M&P9 M2.0 METAL Series
Launched in 2022, the M&P9 M2.0 METAL series offered a fresh take on Smith & Wesson’s tried-and-true M&P M2.0 platform. Swapping out traditional polymer frames for a robust 7075-T6 aluminum, the S&W Metal pistols combined the proven reliability of M&P M2.0 polymers with the distinctive feel and performance of an all-metal frame.
The full size M2.0 Metal with a 4.25” barrel featured a cool Tungsten Gray Cerakote finish and multiple modern-day must-haves, such as forward slide serrations, interchangeable palmswell grip inserts for tailored ergonomics, an optics-ready cut, and a flat-face trigger. The pistol was also compatible with the M&P9 17-round magazines and holsters to ensure M&P fans could adopt the Metal model seamlessly.

The initial success of this series spurred more additions, including the M&P9 M2.0 Metal Carry Comp, which boasted a built-in compensator and Smith & Wesson’s unique ClearSight cut on the top of the slide intended to divert gasses from the optic.
So while polymer frames dominate the handgun market, the release of the original S&W M&P 2.0 Metal reminded shooters of everything metal frame pistols can bring to the table.
Now, with the addition of compact variants, Smith & Wesson is making their METAL series even more versatile.

A Closer Look at the New M&P 2.0 Metal Compact Models
The new M&P 2.0 Metal Compact pistols bring everything users loved about the original full-sized Metal into a carry-friendly frame. Available with either a 4.0-inch or 3.6-inch stainless steel barrel, as well as variants with and with no thumb safety, these pistols are built for concealed carry and EDC.
Both models feature an optic cut, the signature M2.0 flat-face trigger, and accessory rail and come equipped with standard white three-dot iron sights. Also, each pistol ships with four interchangeable palmswells and two 15+1 capacity magazines (10-round options are available for restricted states). Plus, they maintain mag compatibility with polymer M2.0 Compacts.
Both M&P 2.0 Metal 4.0 and 3.6 are priced at an MSRP of $899.
As for applications, the 4” barrel version is a good option for smaller-framed shooters looking for a pistol that is closer to full-size, performance-wise. A smaller 3.6” version is specifically for those who want an all metal concealed carry pistol.
Almost all the design aspects of the new M&P 2.0 Compact pistols are carried over from their full-size counterpart that started the series. So, while there’s nothing revolutionary here, this release gives us a great opportunity to talk about all-metal-frame pistols as a class in general.

Why Metal-Framed Pistols?
All-metal pistols aren’t just for old-school gun fans. These are real-world firearms praised by competition shooters for good balance and professionals for reliability and durability.
Metal-framed pistols feel different the moment you hold one – there’s a tangible heft. This heft doesn’t just make the pistol feel right in hand; it directly impacts the performance characterized primarily by reduced felt recoil, better balance, and improved control overall.
But, metal frames also come with sacrifices. They’re heavier than polymer alternatives, making them less ideal for concealed carry unless you’re willing to work for that ergonomics trade-off. They often require a bit more maintenance too. Yet, the trade-offs can be well worth it depending on your needs and preferences.
Steel vs. Aluminum Frames
Most all-metal pistols you’ll find out there are either steel-frame or aluminum frame.
Steel-framed pistols, like the Beretta 92X Performance, SIG P226 X-Five, or CZ 75 BD, are renowned for their rugged durability and tangible heft. This heft dramatically reduces muzzle flip and felt recoil, allowing for quicker follow-ups. Steel frame guns also typically feel more balanced in hand.
However, the weight that makes them so tame to shoot on the range also makes them impossible to carry. For this reason, most all-steel pistols are duty- or match-size and are better used as competition pistols or nightstand guns.
On the other hand, aluminum-framed pistols like the CZ P-01, SIG P226, or S&W M&P 2.0 Metal balance weight and performance beautifully. They sit in the middle of the spectrum, offering the rigidity and precision of a metal frame without being as cumbersome as their steel counterparts. This makes aluminum-frame pistols great for EDC.
That said, aluminum isn’t as robust as steel. High-stress calibers, like 10mm, have been known to test the limits of early aluminum-framed models. However, most modern aluminum-framed pistols have evolved to handle these stresses.
Why Opt for a Metal Frame Pistol
Reduced Felt Recoil: This is the standout feature of metal frames. That hefty frame absorbs much of the recoil energy, keeping your muzzle on target for faster follow-up shots. The recoil from a metal frame pistol is often described as a pull rather than a snappy kick.
Durability: Quality metal frame pistols are built to last.
Balance & Handling: The rigidity of metal means there’s minimal flex during firing, which translates into a smoother experience.
Heritage & Aesthetics: Aesthetics matter, and metal guns own this space. There’s craftsmanship in their lines, in the way they feel cold and reassuring in hand. Models like the 1911 or Beretta 92 carry an iconic look that’s as much about pride of ownership as it is about performance.
If you want to carry a metal pistol, make sure you get a high-quality gun belt. That will make your carry experience much more comfortable and safer.
You Don’t Want an All Metal Pistol If…
…you need a lightweight EDC pistol to carry all day long. Lightweight polymer-framed alternatives like the SIG P365 typically win the concealed carry contest.
…you’re looking for a budget-friendly handgun. Metal-framed handguns often cost more due to their materials and the machining required to craft them.
…you want a lower-maintenance pistol. All metal pistols may require more attention when it comes to cleaning and lubrication. Steel-framed pistols, for instance, are more prone to corrosion if not properly cared for.
Also, metal frames can absorb and transmit heat or cold, which can affect grip comfort in extreme conditions
